Nipsey Blunt was raised by her aunt and late uncle in Taung. She discovered she could sing when she was 6 years old, entering school competitions and participated in every event that took place at the school. Teachers knew Nipsey was talented. She went to Sacred Hearts Primary School (Music School) in Taung, North West where she learned how to write her own music.

After primary school in 2007, her mom decided to bring her daughter back to Pretoria to live with her sister, and got influenced when her sister used to jam to Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Lauryn Hill, Queen Latifah, Tumi “Stogie T”. She enjoyed listening to Chilled Hop, Jazz and Hip Hop genres.

She went to Amandasig High school in Pretoria. Every day after school, she attended a hip hop dance class with her friends, they thought Nipsey was a perfect name for a dope dancer like her, she was the team choreographer and leader. Her friends always hated when she spoke her mind and was always honest when she doesn’t agree with something that’s when they called her Blunt, too straight forward (“Nipsey o mo Blunt“).
